Ask the Dark

Hello Neighbors,

Lets talk about Ask the Dark and why I gave it 4 stars.

This is a dark, young adult thriller about a boy named Billy who is kind of a punk. He’s done a lot of bratty and possibly illegal things around town that make him a throw away kid. No one in town trusts him, so when he starts to take notice of some suspicious activity, there is really no one he can turn to for help. Everyone thinks he is just a liar. But what they all fail to see is that he’s trying to be better. Unfortunately, the town is made up of people who can’t forgive his past. So, he takes on solving the murders of missing boys by himself, putting his life in danger all while trying to save his family home from being taken. And he can’t count on his dad or sister to help out with that either. This poor kid. Its exactly what I felt for him. Turner writes Billy with such heart that I can’t help but want to try to protect him. The tone of the book and the way its written without traditional use of dialogue lends to the ever-mounting tension and danger that Billy is in. Also, really enjoyed the drawl of the character. The way this book is written reminds me of novels like “Lord of the Flies”, “Catcher in the Rye”, and the novella “The Body” by Stephen King. Not the plot but the style and characters. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more of Henry Turner’s work.
